Peta Hiku has re-signed with the Warriors for the 2021 season.

The center’s contract expires at the end of the year and there were questions about whether it would be retained.

However, the club confirmed on Wednesday that the 27-year-old has put in writing a new contract to remain with the club.

Stuff understood that Warriors management wanted to offer the Kiwi international less money than his current contract and he had started looking at other options at the NRL.

But terms have been agreed and Hiku will continue his time with the Warriors, which was restarted when he returned to New Zealand from Warrington in 2018.

“Peta deserves his new deal,” Warriors manager of recruiting and development Peter O’Sullivan said.

“He has been in stellar form the last six weeks and has worked very hard on his game.

Patrick Herbert is out of contract at the end of the season.

“He brings incredible skill and tries to get participation, whether it’s preparing them or scoring them himself.

“It is not a coincidence that extremes outside of it are always at the top of the scoring attempt list.”

Warriors CEO Cameron George said Hiku’s experience will be invaluable next season.

“Peta brings an invaluable experience to our club. With a number of promising young outsiders who will benefit from his talents, ”said George.

“As a very popular member of the team, it is great news to have him on board as we continue to build our roster for 2021 and beyond.”

While Hiku is prone to defensive lapses, on offense he is one of the NRL’s most creative centers, with great timing, vision and passing precision to find the winger out of him.

Given that the Warriors already signed center Euan Aitken from the Dragons starting next year, Hiku’s renewal could be bad news for Patrick Herbert.

The outside back is also out of contract at the end of the season and with David Fusitu’a and Ken Maumalo set to resume their places on the wings in 2021 and Adam Pompey excelling in recent weeks, Herbert, 23, could find himself a itself. squeezed.

Stuff reported last month that the club wanted to see how Herbert played for the rest of the season before deciding whether to offer him a new contract.

However, Herbert tore his hamstring in training two weeks ago and may not return until the final two rounds of the season.
