The east coast of the South Island is experiencing unusually warm weather and MetService says temperatures are “well above average.”
On Saturday, temperatures on the east coast of the South Island, between Kaikoura and Dunedin, were 5 to 6 degrees Celsius above average, MetService meteorologist Andy Best said.
On Saturday Dunedin would have a maximum of 22 ° C, Oamaru and Ashburton, 24 ° C and Christchurch 23 ° C.
“At night it will also be relatively hot, much of the South Island will be around 6 degrees above average, in the low teens,” Best said.

Temperatures are well above average for the time of year, all due to strong northwesterly winds that are hitting the eastern parts of the South Island, Best said.
Called the Föhn wind, or Foehn, ” it is caused by humid air, rain and drizzle on the west coast and strong winds from the west. And after the humidity has fallen on the Alps, the air that descends east of the Alps becomes considerably hot. And it’s also very dry. ”
Most Cantabrians will know the Föhn wind as the northwestern one.

Snow falls in Queenstown on Monday when a “weather bomb” hits the country.
MetService has a number of severe weather alerts and advisories across the country, primarily for high winds.
” Upper Canterbury has a strong wind warning until noon Sunday. Northwest gales are forecast to be severe at times, with gusts reaching 120 km / h, then 130 km / h from Saturday night. ”
Temperatures will remain high on Sunday with Kaikoura around 27 ° C and Christchurch around 25 ° C, both 9 degrees above average. And Ashburton will reach 8 degrees above average with 24 ° C.
On Monday, the east coast will stay warm with Gisborne up to 27 ° C and Napier at 25 ° C, and between Kaikoura and Dunedin temperatures will be in the early to mid-1920s, Best said.
Even Invercargill hits 21 degrees on Monday.
” It’s pretty typical for this time of year. Spring is a very changeable season with many climatic characteristics that pass quite quickly and strong winds too. ”
But what goes up must come down, and on Thursday Gisborne, Napier and Hastings will have temperatures around 4 degrees below average, Best said.
” For this time of year we normally see around 19 degrees, but temperatures will drop to 13 ° C or 14 ° C. And on the South Island, Ashburton and Christchurch will have a high of 12 degrees, about 4 degrees below average. ”
Temperatures in the rest of the rest of the country are average for this time of year.
