To save money, David Wade built a house for his family using 12 steel shipping containers, and just sold it for “about $ 2 million.”
However, it is not a second-rate home. The house, which sits on 0.62 hr of park-like land, is a massive 320 square feet, and it’s almost impossible to tell it was built from shipping containers, though you can tell them apart in the large atrium-style living room.
Ad agent Angela Finnigan of Bayleys Hamilton says an offer from a local buyer was accepted on Friday, March 20, and that there was a backup offer from an Aucklander in the event that it was not met.
“It’s a family that will move in,” says Finnigan. “David is buying a beach property for his family and a house in Te Awamutu.”

Wade says the house’s industrial design was inspired by a project in northern Maine called “The Adriance House,” by American architect Adam Kalkin.
Black steel and glass surround a massive atrium living room defined by symmetrical steel staircases (purchased from Trade Me) that lead to the upper levels of the wings. A large “fire station” door retracts to open all space to the outside.
Wade recycled the waste from the containers in other areas of the house and even made long industrial handles for the bedroom doors.
The great outdoors have come to the fore when it comes to entertaining, he says.
“We have spent many happy occasions here hosting summer barbecues, sipping poolside cocktails and having lunch with the lake and surrounding countryside as a backdrop.”
The house attracted much international attention when Wade, who emigrated from England more than a decade ago, documented the journey of its construction. He amassed 5,000 Facebook followers from many countries, including France, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
The main house has several living areas and a gym. The quaint park-like property also features a separate laundry room, a two-bedroom cabin, and a 140-square-meter garage that could be used for a home business.
