TVNZ’s Vote Compass tool asked the voters of Jacinda Ardern and Judith Collins, “who would do the best job in terms of handling the Covid-19 pandemic?”

Sixty-four percent said Jacinda Ardern and 20 percent said Judith Collins.

The rest said no or did not know.

Dr Danny Osborne from the University of Auckland investigates political psychology.

“The only thing that might surprise you is that she (Jacinda Ardern) is on her feet so well given the recent outbreak,” he said.

“In that sense, it’s a strong representation of people’s support for Jacinda.”

Support for the Labor leader is also high among undecided voters, with 70 percent saying they thought she would be the best job in terms of handling the pandemic.

However, Dr. Osborne cautions that could change.

“It’s really up to Jacinda to lose if another outbreak happened.”

As for the respondents who said they intended to vote National, only 48 percent of them said they thought Judith Collins would do the best job.

26% of those who intended to vote for National supported Jacinda Ardern when asked the same question.

The remaining 27 percent said they did not know or did not know.

Developed by a team of social scientists and statisticians from Vox Pop Labs, Vote Compass is a civic engagement app offered in New Zealand exclusively by TVNZ. The findings are based on 44,703 respondents who participated in Vote Compass from August 30, 2020 through September 3, 2020.

Unlike online opinion polls, Vote Compass respondents are not shortlisted. However, as in opinion polls, the data is a non-random sample of the population and has been weighted to approximate a representative sample. Vote Compass data has been weighted by gender, age, education, language, region, and previous vote to ensure that the composition of the sample reflects that of the actual New Zealand population based on census data and other population estimates.
