The owners of a Waimarama vacation home, Hawke’s Bay, recently arrived at their home to find themselves locked in and a stranger had felt right at home.
The owner, who did not want to be identified, arrived at the beachfront house on September 13 and found the place closed. He walked around the property and found a 44-year-old man standing on his lawn.
“I had the doors closed. We walked around the back, found it, and grabbed it. He tried to take it down a couple of times, but we caught it, ”said the owner.
“He set up a shop. He had 50 keys in his pocket and he went through them until finally one worked. They told us he stayed there for six days, ”the man said.

Nothing had been damaged at the property, which is valued at more than $ 2 million and has panoramic views of the beach and Bare Island.
The stranger had slept in the owners’ bed and basically felt at home.
He called the police and struck up a conversation with the man while he waited for them to arrive.
“God, he knew a lot about politics. She knew all about Ardern. He knew he had worked for Blair. He wasn’t a jerk. I had a couple of laptops, ”he said.
“He didn’t say anything about why he was in the house.”
The man, whose domicile is in Palmerston North, is due to appear in Hastings District Court later this week charged with entering a building without authorization and with the intention of committing a crime that can be sentenced to prison.
A man-made car, a late-model red Suzuki Swift, is still parked in Waimarama.
