The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has taken the extraordinary step of distancing himself from one of the top lawyers trying to keep him in power.

The move comes as the Trump campaign makes increasingly outlandish claims of voter fraud, just as the legal avenues left for him to stay in office are stifled.

On Sunday (US time), Trump’s team effectively threw out Sidney Powell, a lawyer who had been one of the president’s highest-profile supporters and also the most willing to advance bizarre theories as to why they had been lost the elections.

Trump himself had cited Powell as part of his “team” that spearheaded the “legal effort” around the election a week ago.

Just a few days ago, Powell appeared at press conferences along with Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani and legal counsel Jenna Ellis.

However, Powell appeared to have crossed a line on Saturday when he claimed that Trump lost the state of Georgia in the presidential election because Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, a Trump ally, was in cahoots with Venezuela and had been bribed to yield votes to Joe. Biden.

That prompted former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, one of the most prominent politicians to first endorse Trump during his initial election campaign, to reprimand Powell.

“Sidney Powell accusing Governor Brian Kemp of a crime on television, but not willing to go on television and defend and present the evidence that he allegedly has, is scandalous conduct,” he said Sunday.

A strange statement from Giuliani and Ellis said that Powell had nothing to do officially with the electoral court cases despite his constant presence alongside both.

“Sidney Powell is practicing law on his own,” the statement said.

“She is not a member of Trump’s legal team. Nor is she the president’s attorney in a personal capacity.”

LAUNCH OF ‘KRAKEN’

Powell is a well known conservative attorney. His profile was raised when he took over the case of Michael Flynn, a Trump aide who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI.

She had played a central role in Trump’s efforts to have hundreds of thousands of votes cast out in big cities like Philadelphia and Detroit that voted for Biden. But the legal strategy has failed to produce major changes in the results posted.

He was nicknamed “Kraken,” a huge mythical sea creature, after he promised to “free the Kraken” from evidence to back up his claims.

However, that hasn’t happened yet.

Tucker Carlson, a Fox News commentator who has long been a Trump supporter, criticized Powell last week, berating her for making big claims about voter fraud but not backing them up with any evidence.

“We take Sidney Powell seriously, with no intention of fighting her. We have always respected her work and just wanted to see the details,” he said.

“But she never sent us any evidence, despite many kind requests. When we kept pushing, she got mad and told us to stop contacting her.

“When we consulted with other people about the Trump campaign, people in positions of authority, they also told us that Powell had never given them any evidence to prove anything she claimed at the press conference.”
