Donald Trump’s chief of staff, Mark Meadows, tested positive for Covid-19.

The shock diagnosis comes as the United States eagerly awaits the outcome of the presidential election and on the nation’s biggest day of novel coronavirus cases since the pandemic began.

Meadows is a key member of the Trump campaign, and in recent days he has lent his support to Trump by challenging the vote count in various battle states.

CNN’s Chris Cuomo said that Meadows’ diagnosis demonstrates Trump’s “indifference” toward the Covid-19 pandemic, even though he and other White House staff tested positive in October.

Meadows, who rarely wears a face mask, was reportedly not wearing it on election night at the White House, where she interacted not only with the president, but also with Ivanka Trump, her husband Jared Kushner, and Trump’s son. , Donald Jr.

A White House aide told CNN that officials are now “alarmed” given that Meadows has been close to other Trump staff and family members, although it is potentially contagious.

Meadows, which “abided by President Trump’s efforts to downplay the coronavirus throughout the summer,” The New York Times reports, tested positive for the virus on Wednesday.

A second White House campaign aide, Nick Trainer, is also infected.

It comes just seven weeks after Trump, first lady Melania Trump and her youngest son Barron, as well as at least 30 other people, contracted the virus at an event celebrating the nomination of Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett.

Just nine days before the presidential election, Meadows changed his mind and told CNN that the United States “was not going to control the pandemic … because it is a contagious virus like the flu.”

“What we have to do is make sure we have the right mitigating factors, whether it be therapies or vaccines or treatments to make sure people don’t die from this,” he said.
