US Choice: What Would a Recount Look Like in Georgia?

[ad_1]

They’re still counting votes across the entire state of Georgia, America’s battlefield, and it’s very, very close. While Democrat Joe Biden edged out President Donald Trump early Saturday (NZT), his lead is very narrow, and under Georgia law a candidate can request a recount if the margin is within 0.5 percentage point, which is the case here.

We asked Kate Brumback, a reporter for The Associated Press in Atlanta, what might happen next.

Where is this all going?

With such a small margin, the secretary of state said there will likely be a recount. Any of the candidates can apply. The Trump campaign is lagging behind right now, and it looks like he is likely to ask for one. But if Trump ends up winning, it could be Biden’s campaign calling for a recount.

How could it work?

Well, according to the Secretary of State’s office, the tally will be done on high-speed scanners at each county’s central elections office.

So first they create a test deck and count them by hand. Then they put those same ballots through the scanner and see if the numbers match. If they do, and poll workers determine that the scanner is working accurately, each ballot will be re-scanned.

How could this end?

Of course, it is too early to tell in this case. But the AP investigation shows that there have been at least 31 recounts statewide since 2000. And of those, only three changed the outcome of the election. The starting margins in those races were all under 300 votes.
