Former Donald Trump ally and vice president Mike Pence does not rule out invoking the 25th Amendment in the final days of Trump’s presidency, sources say.
The move would strip the president of his powers, transferring them to Pence, but CNN reports that it is saving the option in case Trump “becomes more unstable.”
The report comes as disturbing new details emerge about the apparent murderous intentions of some of the pro-Trump rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol this week, including the assassinations of Pence and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
A Reuters photographer recounted what the rioters were discussing as they crossed the Capitol on January 6, including hanging the vice president from a tree for being a “traitor.”
Despite being a Republican, Pence is now loathed by several Trump supporters after backing Joe Biden’s electoral college victory.
According to CNN, the terrified Pence and his family were able to hear the chants as they were evacuated from the building, fearing for their lives.
Trump’s opponents in Congress are moving quickly to impeach him, but they face a critical hurdle.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, sent a memo to his members explaining how a second impeachment trial against Trump would work, and why it would not be completed or even commence until the president leaves office on the 20th. from January.
Democrats in the House are expected to introduce and vote on at least one article of impeachment by the middle of next week. After that happens, the next step is to impeach the Senate.
The 25th Amendment, also known as the “Disability Clause,” is used to transfer powers from the President to the Vice President in the event that he is unable to serve.
If enacted, it would see Trump’s presidential powers granted to Pence until Joe Biden is sworn in on January 20.
It has never been used to remove a sitting president. More recently, George W. Bush used it temporarily in 2002 and 2007 while undergoing scheduled colonoscopy procedures.
