The University of Otago graduation ceremony on Wednesday was canceled following a security threat.
The University of Otago canceled two of its graduation ceremonies after a security threat.
The university issued a statement Wednesday warning that the ceremonies, which were expected to take place at 1 pm and 4 pm Wednesday, would not continue.
Vice Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne said in the statement that the university received a threat earlier this week, centered on graduation ceremonies.

“The safety of all who plan to attend the ceremonies and of the Dunedin community at large is at the center of this difficult decision,” he wrote.

Hayne said that many of the ceremonies were replacements for those previously postponed due to Covid-19.
“We know this will be incredibly distressing for all who planned to participate in the ceremonies in person. We share your disappointment. “
Other graduation ceremonies planned for Saturday and next week were still scheduled to continue.
The university will continue to work with police and other authorities as they investigate the threat, he said.
