UFC superstar Conor McGregor was released without charge after being taken into police custody on the Mediterranean island of Corsica on suspicion of attempted sexual assault and indecent exposure, his lawyer said.
McGregor was released before the limit of police custody and does not face charges, his legal representative on the French island Emmanuelle Ramon told AFP, calling the complaint against his client “abusive.”
A spokesman for McGregor sent a statement from the United States saying it “strongly denied any allegations of misconduct.”
Earlier, the Bastia prosecutor’s office issued a statement saying they had received a complaint about McGregor.
“Following a complaint filed on September 10 denouncing acts that could be classified as attempted sexual assault and sexual exposure, Mr. Conor Anthony McGregor was the subject of a hearing by the gendarmerie services,” a statement from the prosecution read delivered to AFP.
The statement did not provide further details on the alleged crimes.
The 32-year-old Irishman vigorously denied the allegations after French police detained him after an incident at a bar.
“Conor McGregor strongly denies any allegations of misconduct. He has been interviewed and released,” he told The New York Post through a spokesperson.
His manager also came out to swing on his behalf.
“I am furious and issue a loud and clear warning: Conor McGregor is not and will not be a target for those looking to get a headline or payday,” Audie Attar said in an email to The Post.
The Irishman, whose nickname is “Notorious,” returned to the Octagon earlier this year after completing court-ordered community service for a bus of rival MMA fighters leaving Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in 2018. He also faced a lawsuit. civilian in Miami after his arrest for destroying a fan’s cell phone.
He announced his third retirement from the sport in June.
The former Ultimate Fighting Championship star is on vacation on the French island with his fiancee Dee Devlin and their two children.
He was detained a few hours before he participated in a 130km charity water bike race from Corsica to Monaco as part of a joint campaign with Princess Charlene of Monaco to highlight water safety.
McGregor’s arrest comes just days after the US anti-doping agency came to examine him in Corsica despite the fact that he had withdrawn.
