Emergency services were called for an incident in Napier early Saturday morning.
Two cars, at least one of which was stolen, were “deliberately” driven into Napier port, police say.
Police divers removed a car that sank into the water at Meeanee Quay in Westshore in the early hours of Saturday morning.
“There are indications that the car, which was stolen, was deliberately thrown into the water,” police said in a statement.

During their search, officers found a second car, which they believed entered the water around the same time as the first car.
Police said Saturday night they were satisfied that no one was inside any of the vehicles after they were submerged.
Emergency services were called to the scene around 5.10 am.
A police spokeswoman said the vehicle was seen in the area around 5 a.m. before it entered the water.
The second car, which was also stolen, will be pulled out of the water on Sunday.
A police officer on the scene said Stuff reporters that the car had strayed 500 meters down the estuary and the last thing they saw of the car was its trunk.
Police received several reports of illegal vehicle seizures in the Napier and Hastings area overnight between Friday and Saturday.
A vehicle, believed to have been stolen, was also found in a ditch near Douglas McLean Ave.
Police are continuing to investigate these reports.
