Two people are in serious condition after a car accident on the Kaipara Coast Highway.
The car reportedly veered off the road at a bend and rolled, end-to-end, through a bush before ending up in a meadow.
No one was caught.
Two Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter crews were called to the scene around 1pm.
They treated two people in serious condition.
A man and a woman in their 30s and 40s were airlifted to Auckland City Hospital.
A police spokesman said the incident occurred between Omaumau Rd and Ogle Rd.
The highway did not appear to be closed, but traffic management would be in place as needed, the spokesperson said.
Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust pilot James Tayler said they landed in a meadow below the road.
“The car had obviously gone through a line of fairly thick hedges and trees … it was in very bad condition, dented everywhere. It looked like it had rolled from one end to the other along the shore spreading the contents across the meadow.”
Tayler said that from what he understood, one of the occupants managed to get out of the vehicle and then helped the other out.
They were both lying on the ground next to the car when emergency services arrived.
Tayler said they were both injured but conscious and “obviously very shocked.”
Emergency services were assisted by a local farmer who lived nearby.
He helped transport patients from the crash site to helicopters, which were unable to land nearby due to terrain.
