Emergency services, including a rescue helicopter, were called to the scene on Main South Road in Burnham around 2 p.m., a police spokesman told 1 NEWS.
“The vehicle heading north towards Christchurch, which we believe, has possibly crossed the center line and collided head-on with the vehicle heading south,” Senior Sergeant Dean Harker, Area Response Manager, told 1 NEWS. from Selwyn district.
One person in each vehicle was trapped after the accident, he said.
One person was seriously injured after the incident.
The occupants of both vehicles have since been airlifted to Christchurch Hospital.
Harker urged motorists to be careful on the roads during Labor weekend.
“Take a little more time to get to your destination. There is a lot of traffic on the road, so just watch those who follow the distances and also the distractions,” he said.
The road is now closed between Thomsons Road and Burnham Road, and detours exist.
