The discovery was made just before the flight left Auckland, Cook Islands Health Ministry Te Marae Ora said on Facebook.
The “public health risk” was at the low end, but both passengers had been placed in supervised quarantine for up to 14 days.
“Due to the unfolding situation in Auckland, we are taking precautionary measures to mitigate the risk to public health for the people of the Cook Islands,” said Secretary of Health, Dr Increa Herman.
Based on entry requirements to the Pacific Islands, all the passengers who arrived on this afternoon’s flight had produced negative Covid test results before departing from Auckland.
Immediately after this afternoon’s flight landed, a doctor from Te Marae Ora boarded the plane and explained the situation in a briefing to all passengers.
The 70 passengers who arrived in Rarotonga on the last two quarantine-free flights have been screened for Covid-19.
