Two people were killed and eight wounded in shootings along the Virginia Beach shoreline, police said Saturday.
Eight people were shot shortly after 11 p.m. Friday (Saturday NZT), Virginia Beach police said in a news release. All eight were transferred to local hospitals, and some of their conditions ranged from severe to life-threatening.
A woman died of a gunshot wound at the scene, according to the statement. In an earlier press conference, Police Chief Paul Neudigate said the death was possibly due to an unrelated shooting.
The statement also said that one officer suffered minor injuries. Neudigate had said that the officer was hit by a vehicle during the investigation.

Another officer shot and killed a man at the scene of the shooting. As officers investigated the original shooting, shots were fired nearby, Neudigate said. The officer confronted the man, prompting the fatal shots.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave. He has been with the department for five years and is assigned to its special operations division.
The original shooting and the officer’s shooting were being investigated at the same time, according to the statement.
“We have a very chaotic incident, a very chaotic night,” Neudigate said during the press conference.
Suspicious information was not immediately available. Neudigate said several people were in police custody, but their possible involvement in the shooting was still under investigation.
Several roads were blocked overnight while police worked in the area.
