Today there are two new cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand, both in the community.

Both cases have an epidemiological link to an existing case and both are associated with the subset of bereavement events that is epidemiologically linked to the Mt Roskill Evangelical Fellowship in Auckland.

One of the cases is a student at Sunnyvale School in Henderson. They were not contagious when they last attended school and the Auckland Regional Public Health Service has not identified any close contact within the school community.

The Health Ministry said the school remains open and safe for students and staff to attend.

There are 33 cases remaining in the Mt Roskill Evangelical Fellowship group and there are now 15 cases in the bereavement event group, which includes cases where the source of infection was bereavement events.

The Ministry said 98 percent of the congregation had been retested.

“We want to thank you again for your participation in contributing to our efforts to control the broader Auckland group.”

There are now 63 people linked to the community group remaining in the Auckland quarantine facility, which includes 47 people who tested positive and their household contacts.

Since August 11, the contact tracing team has identified 3,647 close case contacts, of which 3,640 have been contacted and are self-isolating, the ministry said in a statement.

There are three people in the hospital with covid-19, one in isolation in a ward at Auckland City Hospital. Two are in the ICU, North Shore and Waikato hospitals.

With today’s two new cases and eight additional recovered cases, the total number of active cases is 108. Of these, 38 are imported cases at MIQ facilities and 70 are community cases.

The bereavement subgroup began when an infectious church member visited a grieving family while Auckland was at Level 3. The infectious person had been identified as a close contact of an infected person and should have been isolated at home.
