Police were called to the intersection of Inland Rd and Lake Ohia Flood Bypass Rd in Kaitaia around 1:30 a.m. Saturday after a car parked with two people inside was shot multiple times by a passing vehicle.
The alleged shooters are believed to have been driving a dark-colored four-door vehicle.
“Two shots were fired at the victims’ vehicle, damaging the driver’s door and the rear passenger area,” a police spokesman said.
One of the victims was shot in the leg, while the other was shot in the foot.
His injuries are not life threatening.
The police are asking witnesses to the “extremely serious incident” to contact them by calling 105, citing the file number 201107/9132.

Northland police are already on high alert after a police vehicle was shot up in Kerikeri on September 27.
The shooting took place on State Highway 11, near the Puketona crossing, when a car in front of it stopped the officer at 4.15am on Tuesday morning.
Two men got out of her vehicle and fired at the officer as she was getting to safety, Northland District Inspector Detective Dene Begbie said.
The incident saw temporarily armed police officers in pursuit of those responsible.
Police believe the shooting could be related to a kidnapping in Waipapa, north of Kerikeri, on the night of Monday, October 26.
No arrests have been made.
