Two people appeared in court following an incident on a Paihia bank that resulted in a man fleeing along State Highway 1 and crashing into a tree.

A 22-year-old man appeared in Whangārei District Court on Tuesday charged with illegally detaining someone without their consent, carrying a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison.

He also faced charges of illegal possession of a pistol and shotgun.

A 35-year-old woman appeared in Kaikohe District Court facing the same charges, along with another charge of firing the pistol.

The man was also charged with dangerous driving.

He crashed into a tree near Moerewa on Monday morning after police “guarded” his car as he drove on SH1.

There was no chase, police said, but a patrol had been following the car after the incident at the bank.

Police said they could not provide further details while the matter was in court.
