The Riverton-Wallacetown highway has been closed while emergency services attend to an accident.

A man and a woman were killed after a milk tanker and a motorcycle collided on the Riverton-Wallacetown highway.

A police spokesman said the accident occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. Monday, between the Taramoa and Price highways.

St John said a patient was being airlifted to Dunedin Hospital in critical condition, but police later confirmed that the woman had died from her injuries.

A man died at the scene.

The accident happened near the Oreti bridge.

The road was expected to remain closed for some time while the Serious Accident Unit attended the scene, the police spokeswoman said.

Motorists should expect delays, take an alternate route, or delay travel through the area.

The helicopter left the scene around 3 in the afternoon.

A Fonterra spokeswoman confirmed that one of the company’s trucks was involved in the accident and that the driver was unharmed.

The company was supporting the driver and assisting police with their investigation, he said.
