Emergency services at the scene of a multiple vehicle accident near Invercargill. Two people are in critical condition.

Two people are in critical condition after a multi-vehicle accident on the Winton-Lorneville highway, near Invercargill, just before 4 p.m. Wednesday.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said some of those involved in the accident had been trapped in two vehicles.

Communications advisor for the St John Ambulance region of the South Island, Gerard Campbell, said two people were in critical condition.

One was airlifted to Southland Hospital and the other was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital.

A third person suffered serious injuries and was taken to Southland Hospital, and a fourth person suffered minor injuries, Campbell said.

Police, ambulance, fire and emergency personnel from St John NZ rushed to the scene and two helicopters were dispatched.

A statement from the New Zealand Transportation Agency says State Highway 6 is closed between Counsell Rd and North Makarewa-Grove Bush Rd.

The road was to be closed at night.

The police were expected to return to the scene tomorrow to continue the investigation into the cause of the accident.

Turnouts are in place, but drivers are asked to avoid the area if possible.

A person who passed the scene of the accident said the accident “looked bad.”

A car appeared to have ended up on the roof, the person said.

A Stuff The reporter said there was a vehicle in a ditch and that it was possible that four cars were involved.
