Emergency services at the scene of a multiple vehicle accident near Makarewa. At least one person in critical condition.
Two people are in critical condition after a multi-vehicle accident on the Winton-Lorneville highway, near Invercargill, just before 4 p.m. Wednesday.
A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said some of those involved in the accident had been trapped in two vehicles.
St John’s Ambulance South Island region communications advisor Gerard Campbell said two people were in critical condition.
One was airlifted to Southland Hospital and the other was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital.
A third person suffered serious injuries and was taken to Southland Hospital, and a fourth person suffered minor injuries, Campbell said.

Police, ambulance, fire and emergency personnel from St John NZ rushed to the scene and two helicopters were dispatched.
A statement from the New Zealand Transportation Agency says State Highway 6 is closed between Counsell Road and North Makarewa-Grove Bush Road.
A person who passed the scene of the accident said the accident “looked bad.”
A car appeared to have ended up on the roof, the person said.
