The man was found after three nights outdoors in Mount Richmond Forest Park.
A man who spent three wet nights in open ground in Nelson’s Mount Richmond Forest Park was found cold but alive.
The 30-year-old man was spotted from the air on Friday morning, four miles from his planned exit route at Lake Chalice, a statement from the police media team said.
The man had been last seen at the Red Hills Hut on October 31. When he did not show up as planned on Wednesday, his relatives raised the alarm. Police and Ground Search and Rescue (LandSAR) began a search on Friday morning.

Three police officers, six volunteers and a private helicopter searched the alpine terrain between Red Hills and Lake Chalice.
Cold and wet, the homeless man was badly blistered, his hands severed from trying to get out of the gorges and cliffs in the area.
However, he was mostly unharmed and “extremely lucky,” police said.
Police urged the homeless people to check the looming weather.
“Read and understand the long-term forecast, don’t try to cross flooded rivers, and have a contingency plan in case of bad weather.”
Sgt Malcolm York, search and rescue coordinator for the Nelson Bays police, said homeless people should plan ahead, take maps and familiarize themselves with the terrain and forecast. Technology meant there were few excuses for staying lost, York said.
“Carrying a beacon is very important today.
“Kiwis have cabin fever and want to go out, but we don’t want to see anyone lost.”
