Heavy traffic has been the norm this holiday period on State Highway 1 between Otaki and Levin (File photo).

Travelers are being told to expect long delays as traffic continued to pile up in both directions in and out of Wellington on Tuesday.

Congestion built up significantly around the Waikanae on-and-off ramp around noon and was busy along State Highway 1 heading north between Peka Peka and Ōtaki.

The Waka Kotahi NZ Transportation Agency has warned northbound road users to expect delays of between 30 and 45 minutes while traveling through Waikanae, and told southbound drivers to expect delays of between 15 and 30 minutes.

Starting at 4 pm, traffic would have decreased in some of the worst affected areas.

The Waka Kotahi Holiday Journeys tool predicted that northbound traffic should decrease after 3:30 pm, while southbound traffic will remain heavy until 6:00 pm.
