While his two-year-old son was playing with a methamphetamine pipe in a locked car, Kebone Anthony Nkhasi went on a robbery at the Chartwell Countdown supermarket.

A two-year-old boy was left alone in a car outside a Hamilton shopping center with a methamphetamine pipe as a toy, while his father went on a shoplifting spree inside.

That father, Kebone Anthony Nkhasi, 40, was jailed for 19 months when he appeared in Hamilton District Court on Friday.

He had previously pleaded guilty to a series of charges including neglect of a child, possession of methamphetamine utensils, five counts of robbery, and assault with a weapon, namely a car.

The negligence and utensil charges stemmed from an incident around 6 p.m. at the Chartwell Mall on April 22.

Nkhasi had left his son in his car outside the mall for about half an hour while he was inside. A passerby noticed that the boy was alone inside the vehicle and called the police.

While trapped inside the car, the young man found a glass methamphetamine pipe and a snap-lock bag used to pack methamphetamine and began playing with them.

The boy was still inside the locked vehicle when police arrived, sucking on the snap-lock bag.

While this was happening, Nkhasi was busy stealing inside the Countdown supermarket inside the mall. While shopping for various items, he dropped several more: two bags of Tegel chicken, a packet of ground beef, a Phoenix orange juice, and an Oh My Veg packet, which he smuggled into a bag as he went through the checkout.

He returned to his car and found the police waiting for him.

It was not the first time that Nkhasi had robbed a store. On February 28, she went to the Bunnings Warehouse on Te Rapa Rd, where she grabbed a Karcher floor cleaning device worth $ 498, which she kept in her car.

That crime was discovered by a Bunnings staff member who confronted him. Nkhasi got nervous, got into his car and reversed the employee, knocking the man to the ground, before taking off.

Another Bunnings store, on Quentin Drive, had been his target target 17 days earlier. On that occasion, he stole $ 1,312 worth of items, including a ceiling fan, which he kept in his car before paying $ 5 in lumber and attempting to leave.

There were previous incidents. On December 7 of last year, Nkhasi was in the parking lot of The Base shopping center. So was a woman who had parked and gone shopping.

When he got back to his car, he opened it with his vehicle’s remote control. Nkhasi, who was standing next to the vehicle, quickly opened the door, grabbed his iPhone, and ran back to his own car before driving away.

And on November 22, he filled a shopping cart at The Warehouse on Clyde St, Hillcrest, with numerous items before entering the store’s locker room where he began opening several of the packages.

The staff confronted him. He got aggressive, pushed the cart towards one of his accusers and ran off, taking a bottle of perfume and some children’s clothing.

Judge Glen Marshall sentenced Nkhasi to 19 months in jail and gave him some stern advice.

“You really need to get ready. You will end up losing your family unless you make changes, and those changes mean giving up that methamphetamine. “

Nkhasi must already be released, based on time served.
