Three teenagers accused of murdering a 90-year-old Levin woman during a home invasion

Crown prosecutor Ben Vanderkolk told the court that the girls, whose names are being removed, planned the attack on social media.

“Three young women contacted each other on Facebook Messenger, and then, armed with knives, decided to rob a house,” Vanderkolk said.

The court was informed that two of the teenagers entered the house while the youngest was watching. Inside, one of the girls violently attacked Virtue and then took her credit card.

“Ms. Virtue’s card was used to buy three lollipops, drinks, a hoodie, a pair of jeans, and tobacco,” Vanderkolk said.

Virtue died from his injuries 25 days after the attack.

“For all of us in this room, justice requires total detachment, indifferent to sympathy and prejudice. These three young women must be judged fairly. We are only concerned with what they did and what they thought at the time,” Vanderkolk said.

The court heard members of Virtue’s family, including her granddaughter Samantha, who said her once-independent grandmother began to lose her mind after the attack, and recounted that her grandmother told her she could see pure evil in one of the girl’s eyes.

Lawyers for the two 16-year-olds told the court that the couple did not plan to cause serious harm to Virtue.

“You can’t just say that she knew, or you can infer that she knew, that really serious harm would occur,” said defense attorney Scott Jefferson.

“At the end of this test, we will invite you to find [one of the teens] not guilty of murder, but found guilty of murder, “said defense attorney Gareth Stone.

The case is resolved for three weeks.
