The baby’s mother and her 10-year-old son were also in the car when the incident occurred on Kaitaia-Awaroa Road in Ahipara around 1:00 pm today, police said.
The vehicle, a gray pickup truck, was traveling on the road when it “went off the road on the left side, cut through the ditch and rolled over on its side,” Sgt. Wally Broughton told 1 NEWS.
Police say the baby was in a rear-facing car seat in the front passenger seat at the time.
“That baby’s position was probably not the best idea, as it should have been in the back seat, to be fair, but there was already a child in the back seat and other property in that car.”
The mother was unharmed in the accident, while the child is stable.
Members of the public assisted the family from the vehicle after the incident, according to 1 NEWS.
Two ambulances and two helicopters rushed to the scene, and one person was flown to Northland Hospital in serious condition, St John said.
Speed was not a factor in the accident and police are investigating further.
The Serious Accident Unit has been notified and cordons have been established.
