Four people were injured, one seriously, after a car accident in Dome Valley, north of Auckland.
Emergency services were called to the crash site near Waiwhiu Conical Peak Rd around 11.30am on Wednesday.
St. John’s spokeswoman Beverley Tse said three helicopters had been dispatched to the crash site, one from Northland and two from Auckland.
He said St John was evaluating a critically ill patient and was treating two critically ill and one moderately ill.
A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson said people were trapped in the vehicles.
Major road works are underway on SH1 from Puhoi to Wellsford, as part of the construction of the Ara Tūhono Highway and the NZTA project to make travel through the Dome Valley safer.
Much of the highway has only one lane in each direction, with a speed limited to 50 kilometers per hour.
State Highway 1 was closed between Warkworth and Wellsford as a result of the accident.
Police have established a detour in SH1 at Kaipara Flats Rd to the south and Wayby Valley Rd to the north.
Motorists traveling between Wellsford and Auckland are advised to take the alternate route via SH16 to avoid these detours.
Otherwise, motorists can expect delays and deviations are expected to remain in place for some time.
