Three people were killed after a car and truck collided on State Highway 2 near Takapau.

Emergency services were called for the accident between Snee Rd and Byrne Rd at 2:48 p.m. Tuesday.

A police spokeswoman said the Central Hawke’s Bay road was blocked after the collision of two vehicles.

A spokeswoman for St John Ambulance said three ambulances and a helicopter rushed to the scene.

Police said there are detours at the SH2 intersections of State Highway 50, Charlotte Rd and Kopua Rd.

“There is a deviation, however we are asking motorists to avoid the area and delay travel for the next two hours,” the police spokeswoman said.

The three dead engines were traveling in the car, while the truck driver was airlifted to Hawke’s Bay Hospital.

The road will be closed for the next few hours.

According to a transportation agency for Waka Kotahi NZ, a spokesperson for Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne, the southbound SH2 lane is closed with detours near Charlotte Rd.

“Northbound remains open,” the spokesperson said. “Be very careful when passing and expect delays in the area.

“Contractors are on the way,” the spokeswoman added.

The crash followed two serious SH2 crashes in the region on Monday, before noon.

An accident at 6.16am involving a light truck was the first of two accidents that shut down parts of SH2.

A man in his 30s and a teenager were taken to hospital from the scene of the accident near Te Kahu Rd. The couple had serious to moderate injuries, but were later reported to be in stable condition.

The highway was closed for just over an hour, before a lane was opened between 7.35am and 11am

Police were also called into a two-vehicle accident near the Omahu Rd and SH2 roundabout at 10.15am

One person had to be released from one of the vehicles by the Fire and Emergency team.

A man in his 20s was taken to Hawke’s Bay Hospital, where he was stable.

The two previous accidents occurred in good weather conditions, with dry roads and good visibility.
