The accident occurred on Harbottle Rd, near the intersection of State Highway 26, Motumaoho, east of Hamilton, a police spokesman said.

Police were called to the scene at 6:20 pm. A rescue helicopter arrived at the scene of the accident.

Four ambulances attended along with a manager, a St John spokesman said.

One of the critically ill patients was airlifted to Waikato Hospital, the spokesman said.

The other two people in critical condition and the person in critical condition were taken to the hospital by road, St John said.

“The first indications are that four people are seriously injured.”

The road was initially closed and curbs were erected at the intersection of SH26 and Schollum Rd and SH26 and Kuranui Rd.

Since then, the road has been reopened.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area and expect delays.
