Thomas Jefferson Byrd, who acted in several films by director Spike Lee, was assassinated in Atlanta, United States.

Byrd appeared in Lee’s films, which included Clockers, Get on the bus, Tricked, Chi-Raq Y Summer Red Hook.

The director paid tribute to him on Instagram on Sunday.

“I am very sad to announce the tragic murder of our beloved brother Thomas Jefferson Byrd last night in Atlanta. Georgia. Tom is my boy. Down here you see him as the terrifying character Errol Barnes in CLOCKERS. Brother Byrd did his thing on my joints too: CHI-RAQ, SWEET BLOOD OF JESUS, SUMMER RED HOOK, BAMBOOZLED, HAVE GAME, RIDING THE BUS, GIRL 6 AND WATCHES. May we all wish our condolences and blessings to his family. Rest in peace brother Byrd, ”Lee wrote.

The Atlanta Police Department confirmed the news in a statement to Variety.

They said they had been called home in Atlanta and found Byrd unconscious at the scene.

Emergency medical services were called to the scene, but pronounced him dead from multiple gunshot wounds to the back.
