New Zealand’s best experience, according to the authors, is Fiordland National Park, which is ranked 29th, while Queenstown is near the bottom of the world list, 496th.
The list describes Fiordland as a “landscape of giants” and compares it to going back to the Jurassic period, where “the heart of the wild” calls.

The list of the 500 “most exciting, memorable and interesting travel experiences in the world” appears in the second edition of Lonely Planet Definitive travel list table book.
With border restrictions imposed by many countries in response to Covid-19, Lonely Planet suggested that the book would help “satisfy your wanderlust from the safety of an armchair.”
The way the list was calculated had changed since the first edition of the book, with bonus points for places that manage tourism sustainably, Lonely Planet’s Chris Zeiher said.
The second edition had 200 new entries.
While Australia had the third highest rated entrant overall, it only had nine entries on the list, compared to New Zealand’s 13.
