Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate over the next few days for most, with some improvement forecast on Christmas Day.
By Monday morning, a front with warm air had reached the west coast, coming from the northwest, bringing rain. Some wet weather, even if only rain, was expected to hit most of the South Island during the day.
But the dry areas in the north can be lucky to get a lot of rain, if at all. MetService forecasts mostly dry weather for the North Island on Monday, which is also the day of the summer solstice, the time when the South Pole has the closest angle to the Sun.
For Tuesday, MetService forecasts scattered showers for the west of the North Island and Wairarapa, while the rest of the North Island is expected to be fine, although the north could receive a scattered rain, or two. The South Island is forecast to be wet in the west on Tuesday, with rains elsewhere.

On Wednesday, the west of the North Island is expected to have isolated rains, while for the South Island the rains to the west are expected to spread, although not to Canterbury.
The North Island and the west of the South Island are forecast to see rain on Thursday, although little is expected in Northland. Rains are forecast for the rest of the South Island.
On Friday, Christmas Day, the North Island is forecast to be essentially dry, while MetService expects isolated rains on the South Island to spread to the south starting in the afternoon.
MetService forecasts a mostly good Monday for Auckland with a high of 25 degrees Celsius, then a few spots of rain on Tuesday, cloudy spells on Wednesday, a few morning showers on Thursday and then good times on Friday (Christmas Day).
Wellington had a spotty drizzle early Monday, but that should clear and the capital is expected to peak at 20 ° C. Scattered showers are forecast for the city on Tuesday, with the showers turning to rain on Wednesday and continuing into Thursday, when the north winds could become strong. Friday is expected to improve.
Christchurch is forecast to have low clouds and rain on Monday, peaking at just 17 ° C, improving the weather for Tuesday afternoon, when the temperature is forecast to reach 25 ° C. A good day is forecast for Christchurch Wednesday, then a few showers Thursday morning, followed by a cloudy but dry Friday.
Humidity is expected to be high on the North Island through Wednesday night, with tropical air and light winds in many areas, but MetService indicates that humidity will drop with a switch to cooler southerly winds on Christmas Day.
