Mount Ruapehu’s skifields were hit by a cyber attack today, the latest in a series of similar attacks on New Zealand businesses.

On a busy day, the Whakapapa ski area on Mount Ruapehu welcomes thousands of visitors, seen here leaving the countryside at the end of a good day.

Ruapehu Alpine Lifts says the deliberate attack failed and the parking system was back online a few minutes later.

It says the developer’s security team is following up with the attacker’s ISP.

It is not known if the attack on the skifields’ parking reservation website is related to so-called distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks that have targeted NZX, MetService and the media for the past week.

Meanwhile, the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) is advising government departments and other institutions fighting cyberattacks to disable some online functions or remove content as a last resort.

The GCSB says that government agencies must make sure their websites are protected from any attack before it happens.

In the event of an attack, they should ask their service providers for help or hire a mitigation service, temporarily transfer services to the cloud, disable some features, or remove content.

Meanwhile, the government activated the Committee of Internal and External Security Coordination Officials, which met on Friday.
