The politicians’ misstep at the end of the campaign: Winston Peters deals with mediocre supporters while Judith Collins has an embarrassing encounter with the deputy leader

Leaders were asked what they would do if high school students were forced to leave school and find employment to support their families. Collins began his response by saying “My husband is Samoan, talofa”.

“We have to get people to dedicate themselves [and] we have to give them an education, “she continued, saying that her husband also dropped out of school to find a job.

However, her response was heavily criticized on social media with people accusing her of using her husband as a “shield.” Collins slammed the criticisms, calling them “disgusting.”

Collins’ strange encounter with Congressman Gerry Brownlee

And it only gets worse for Collins, who had an embarrassing encounter with his deputy leader Gerry Brownlee.

Bracewell-Worrall said Collins and Brownlee had a weird moment in the last week before the election when Gerry was making campaign calls.

“It was a little strange, she came into the room and wagged her fingers ‘Hi Gerry’.”

Then he accidentally scared Brownlee by walking behind him while he was trying to talk on the phone.

“He was diligently banking on the phone and she said, ‘making some phone calls, there’s Gerry’ and he said ‘aaah.’

Brownlee’s awkward moment follows another earlier in the week in which he unreservedly apologized after losing control to a journalist for asking him a question about health policies.

Last week, Brownlee objected to being asked a question about an occupational health ad, as it did not directly relate to their wallets.

Newshub had arranged the interview to take place and the National Party media team was alerted to the possible topics of the interview. A Wellington staff member did the interview on behalf of the Newshub political team.

But Brownlee lashed out at him because he wasn’t in politics.

“Is it Anna Bracewell Worrall? Yeah. She should know better than asking this. Your people give me shit. They’re fucking lazy,” Brownlee said.
