At no time was the group believed to be in immediate danger, a police spokeswoman said.
A relative of one of the vagrants had told police that the group had experience and that they carried supplies for a few days.
As the police and the family member had predicted, the group decided not to cross the river due to the recent large amount of rain and returned to the cabin at night to wait until the water level dropped.
Remutaka Forest Park is a protected area near Wellington.
The park covers 220 square kilometers. It has short walks and cabins that can be reserved for longer homeless people.
