Hick Bros Infrastructure Ltd has been convicted and fined for dumping a large amount of sediment into the Waikato River.

Construction company Hick Bros Infrastructure Ltd has been fined for discharging sediment into the Waikato River during the construction of the Waikato Expressway.

The company has been convicted and fined $ 32,500 for dumping a large volume of sediment in January 2019.

The discharge occurred as a result of the failure of a ground beam that had been built to contain the water.

The fault occurred near Hamilton and initially impacted the Mangaonua Creek that flows into the Waikato River.

The visual impacts on the river were significant, the Waikato Regional Council said in a statement issued Friday.

The sentencing result was released this week by Hamilton District Court Judge Brian Dwyer as a result of a prosecution initiated by the Waikato Regional Council.

Judge Dwyer commented on the “excellent track record” of the company, but said this violation “demonstrates a certain inattention or poor management practice that contributed to this event.”

Waikato Regional Compliance Manager Patrick Lynch said the highway is an absolutely huge project that has been very well managed.

“This was an isolated incident by a reputable company, but it shows the extremely high level of care that must be taken on projects of this scale,” said Lynch.

Hick Bros Infrastructure Ltd is part of the alliance group that has been formed to coordinate and build the Waikato Expressway project of the Waka Kotahi NZ Transportation Agency.
