There have been at least six serious accidents on New Zealand’s roads today.
The first accident took place early this morning, when police were called to Nikau Road, west of Pahiatua, just before 5 a.m.
One person died and another was seriously injured in the two-car accident.
Another accident this morning, this time on Kahikatea Flat Road in Dairy Flat, north of Auckland, resulted in the death of one person.
Two people were injured in an accident on State Highway 75 near Tai Tapu on the outskirts of Christchurch.
St John Ambulance was called for the accident near the intersection of Ahuriri Road and Christchurch Akaroa Road shortly before 7:30 am.
One person had serious injuries and another had moderate injuries; both were transferred to Christchurch Hospital.
Then this afternoon, another accident near Christchurch: Three people were injured after a three-car accident on State Highway 73 in West Melton.
Police were called in for the accident near the intersection of the highway and Sandy Knolls Road at around 2.45 p.m.
Three people were injured, one seriously.
Just before 3 p.m., an accident occurred between a motorcyclist and a car on State Highway 25 near School of Miners Lane in Kuaotunu in Coromandel.
One person was seriously injured. A helicopter and the Serious Accident Unit were dispatched.
Emergency services also responded to a serious accident between a truck and a car on State Highway 1 in Wellsford around 5.10 p.m.
Closures were underway on State Highway 1, State Highway 16, and Kaipara Flats Road.
One person was seriously injured and three were in moderate condition.
Motorists were asked to avoid the area.
So far, the holiday road toll is eight, already double the official holiday road toll last year.
