Ulises Davila has been named Phoenix captain for the 2020-21 A-League season.
Mexican star Ulises Dávila led Wellington Phoenix in scoring last season, now he will lead the team as captain.
Surprisingly, the former Chelsea player was awarded the captain’s armband for the upcoming A-League season following the departure of English defender Steven Taylor.
All Whites midfielder Alex Rufer, who, along with English forward David Ball, was one of the most favored candidates to succeed Taylor, will continue to serve as vice captain.

Wellington Phoenix will look to win over Wollongong fans ahead of the new A-League season, says Ufuk Talay.
Dávila was an instant hit in his first season in the A-League, scoring a total of 12 goals after arriving from Indian Super League club Delhi Dynamos.

“Last season, Ulises was a very influential player for the team, both on and off the field,” said coach Ufuk Talay.
“He has a lot of respect from the rest of the boys, both for his level of play and for his professionalism, the way he behaves at all times; he is an influential part of the team.
“I see that Ulises is a leader not so much because of his words, but because of his actions on and off the field. I know it and the team knows that every time he goes out on the field, he will play the best he can and will do everything possible to win.
Dávila, who signed a five-year contract with Premier League giants Chelsea in 2011 but never played due to visa issues, said he is honored to take on the leadership role, even if it was a bit unexpected.
“I am happy to be named captain. It is a great honor and a great responsibility. Like last season, I will try to do everything possible for the team and the club, ”he said.
“I am not a man of many words, nor do I speak much. But I will do my best and try to be a captain with good deeds. I will try to pressure everyone to try to get the best of themselves. “
Wollongong-based Phoenix are scheduled to start the 2020-21 A-League season in Brisbane Roar on December 29, but the resurgence of Covid-19 in New South Wales and subsequent border closures could force to postpone the game. .
