A police spokesman said they were aware of the footage and were informed.

“We are currently consulting to speak with the child’s family to make sure he is well and provide road safety education,” they said.

“We want to remind all road users, including pedestrians, of the importance of keeping them and their families safe on our roads. This includes ensuring that parents directly supervise their children on or near public roads, to look before crossing and use designated crosswalks when possible. “

A video of the incident, captured with the dash cam of another car, was uploaded to Dash Cam Owners New Zealand’s Facebook page with the caption: “Mom must take responsibility here.”

Commenters agreed, saying the child’s mother needs a “reality check” and teaching her children to look before crossing paths.

“That is so scary !!” said one person. “We don’t live far away and she’s very lucky that those drivers knew her more than her mother. The amount of people spending on this road is crazy.”

Others pointed out that there is a pedestrian crossing less than 100 meters down the road that would have ensured that the family could cross safely.
