There were stormtroopers, spidermen, and even a wolverine. Cosplay was in abundance in Auckland on Saturday, as was the crowd.
Tens of thousands of people crowded into the Armageddon exhibit with no room for social distancing
“I’m really not that worried,” said one person.
“Not personally. I stay home all the time, so no,” said another.
“I have asthma so I have my inhalers and all my medications on hold if I feel like something is going to happen,” added a third.
Organizers say this year’s exhibition is the largest in its 25-year history and may even be the largest in the world.
“This is bigger than Comic-Con this year. This is probably the biggest pop culture event on the planet for 2020,” says founder Bill Geradts.
And the pulling power of the stars was unlike any other exhibition with over 60 celebrity guests virtually beaming.
Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder even made an appearance while driving his car.
“You guys are very lucky. You are in the safest place in the world right now.”
Even though fans weren’t able to get photos with the big stars, that didn’t stop them from walking through the doors.
Some wore masks, but many more braved the heat in heavy suits, like Chewbacca, who spent a penny on his.
It was also a gamer’s paradise with archery and ax throwing for the more active to a full indoor arcade experience.
In a year of running of the bulls, there hasn’t been much action on the dance floor, so it’s no surprise that this activity has been one of the most popular.
For those who still want to get in on all the cosplay action, Armageddon is running throughout the long weekend.
