A young man was arrested after a stone went through the windshield of a car
taking a couple and their young child to West Auckland.

The incident occurred in Royal Heights at Northwestern Motorway on Saturday afternoon, a witness who contacted the Herald said.

At around 4 p.m., police were informed that a group of youths were throwing objects at vehicles passing by on the Northwest Highway, a police spokeswoman said.

“One of the objects allegedly went through the windshield of a vehicle. There were no reports of injuries.”

Police spoke to the youth and one person was detained, he said.

“A young man was arrested and has since been referred to Youth Aid in connection with this incident.”

The witness did not see the impact, but heard police speaking to a man who they believed was the boy’s father.

“He was absolutely furious. As far as he was concerned, they had tried to kill his little … the woman [with him] I was crying but the baby was fine. “

The man who contacted the Herald estimated the boy to be about 2 years old.

Four teenagers were at the scene and six police cars arrived after emergency services were alerted, the man said.

The windshield of the family’s car, a white van traveling westward, slammed into the passenger side.

The incident was “bloody horrific” and I kept thinking about the death of a murdered man when an 8 kg concrete block was deliberately thrown from Princes St Bridge on Auckland’s South Highway.

Taupō, Christopher Currie, 20, a mainstay of the King Country U-20 rugby team traveling to a game, was killed instantly when the block smashed through the windshield of his car in 2005.

Three passengers were injured when the car subsequently crashed and a 14-year-old boy, Ngatai Rewiti, was found guilty of manslaughter for Currie’s death and sentenced to four years in jail.
