At the end of their lakeside media confrontation, Peters, who was recently caught smoking on the smoke-free campus of the University of Otago, was confronted by a man wearing a red cap.
“Don’t tell me you’re going to start smoking. I saw you smoking on TV, ”the man tells Peters.
Video of the exchange shows the pair in a brief flashback to whether it was a question or a statement, before Peters finally responds.
“If I (smoked), it’s my business, it’s a freedom problem, buddy,” Peters responds.
“I didn’t come to ask you what you are doing lately.”
“It’s bad though,” the man replies.
“Yes, I know it’s bad, and our job is to make sure New Zealanders drop it, there are solid plans to do so, very soon, in two hours, I will reveal our plan in Tūrangi.”
“In front of your cuzzies down there.”
“I hope you don’t do it again,” the man replies, also uttering a rare last word.
The man then took a selfie to mark the conversation.
Later, NZ First issued a statement, endorsing ASH’s strategy to make alternatives to smoking affordable and widely available.
“New Zealand First will reduce the tobacco tax so that the average pack of cigarettes does not exceed $ 20, eliminate taxes on smoking cessation tools and end the belief that what we are doing is working,” said Peters .
