Auckland Transport says that authorities, rather than their own staff, will have to enforce the requirement that passengers wear masks from midnight tonight.

It is mandatory that anyone using public transportation anywhere in the country wear a face cover from midnight tonight, if people do not have a mask they can wear a scarf or bandana.

People with a disability or physical or mental health condition that prevent them from covering their face are exempt, as well as those under 12 years of age.

Health Minister Chris Hipkins has said there will be a “light touch” in terms of enforcement, although people can face a $ 300 violation notice or a fine of up to $ 1000 imposed by the courts.

Auckland Transport spokesman Mark Hannan said they hope to take an educational approach rather than trying to strictly enforce the new rule.

He said many Aucklandites already wear face covers, so the transport operator expects a smooth transition.

“I think it is becoming quite normal now that people in Auckland cover their faces, if you go to a supermarket here just say so, or on public transport, you will find that most people wear some kind of face covering.”

Auckland Transport drivers will also wear masks and buses will run with about half of their full passengers to help maintain physical distance.

Anyone attending court in the Auckland region will also be required to wear a mask in public spaces and courtrooms starting tomorrow.

The Chief Justice said the step is necessary due to concerns about community transmission of Covid-19.

Dame Helen Winkelmann said that wearing masks is also encouraged in courts in other parts of the country.

In Auckland, people will be offered a mask if they don’t have one of their own.

Meanwhile, the government is encouraging people in south and west Auckland to get tested for Covid-19, whether or not they show symptoms.

It says that people who live in those areas, or who are at higher risk for poor health outcomes, should get tested.

The prime minister will confirm today at 1:00 p.m. whether Auckland will go to alert level 2 from Monday.
