A senior Timaru firefighter has expressed concern after two suspicious fires at the same location in 24 hours.

New Zealand Fire and Emergency Station (Fenz) Timaru Senior Officer Martyn Bennett said crews were back at the same location under the Port Loop Rd (State Highway 78) overpass in Timaru on Wednesday for the afternoon after they had extinguished an earlier fire on Tuesday.

“The biggest problem here is that if they are lighting fires, it is not normal behavior.

He believed that the younger members of the community had deliberately lit the fires.

“We came here yesterday at the same time, it was a general waste, today it’s sticks and wood.”

Bennett said Fenz was alerted Wednesday by a member of the public that he saw smoke rising from under the overpass.

He said a section of the railroad had to be closed for about 30 minutes as a result of the fire.
