On Friday night, police investigating Wayman’s death raided the South Island headquarters of the international motorcycle gang Mongols MC outside of Christchurch.

It is understood that the Mongols organized a party on the platform, which is near Burnham, on New Year’s Eve.
On Saturday morning, Detective Sergeant Major Joel Syme said a 24-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman had been charged with murder in connection with Wayman’s death.
They appeared in Christchurch District Court on Saturday morning before Judge Jane McMeeken.
They are accused of jointly offending with “unknown persons” the murder of Wayman.
The two defendants, one of whom is a pawn, received provisional name suppression and were placed in pretrial detention to appear in Christchurch High Court until February 4.
“This is a tragic event and our thoughts are with Mr. Wayman’s family,” Syme said.
“The investigation continues to determine if there are other people involved.”
On Friday morning, the white Mercedes was seen cordoned off and guarded by police in front of the new Christchurch Hospital building, Waipapa, on Riccarton Ave.
It was later removed by a crane.
Stuff understands that the Mercedes had earlier stopped behind a fire truck parked in front of the Canterbury Museum on Rolleston Ave.
The driver told firefighters, who were responding to a call, that an injured man was in the car.
He said he found Wayman, whom he knew, off State Highway 1 near Burnham.
Later, firefighters helped the woman take him to the hospital.
State Highway 1 near Burnham was briefly closed on Friday night when armed police raided the area of Mongol gangs.
Investigators remained at the scene Saturday.
A shocked friend of Wayman, who declined to be named, said she was invited to a party at the Mongolian home on New Year’s Eve but was unable to go.
Something must have gone “terribly wrong,” he said.
“Kane didn’t deserve to be hurt the way he was.”
The woman, who had known Wayman for about 12 years, said he was the “kindest teddy bear.”
“We will miss him a lot, mainly because of his daughter, family and friends.”
The Mongols, led by National President Jim Thacker, established a chapter in the Bay of Plenty in 2019.
The gang expanded to the South Island early last year, creating tension between rival groups, particularly the Tribesmen MC, which was considered the dominant player in the region’s underworld at the time.
In separate attacks in February, believed to be targeting Mongols, a tattoo parlor and a barber shop were struck by vehicles in Christchurch. The barbershop, which has no apparent link to the gang other than through a man who used to associate with local president Jason Ross, was also bombed.
The same month, the Mongol headquarters in Burnham was shot by someone wielding a high-caliber rifle.
Police raided the property several days later and found 10 weapons, military-style semiautomatic, shotguns and a pistol, some of which were hidden in the walls and ceiling, along with dozens of bullets, $ 50,000 in cash and methamphetamine.
Since then, the police, including members of the National Group Against Organized Crime, have raided the platform on at least two other occasions.
Anyone with information about Wayman’s death should contact the police at 105 or Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111.
