Unbearable cold will move up and through much of the North Island and most of eastern New Zealand today, according to WeatherWatch.
“Temperatures will be several degrees below normal by the end of December in several regions,” says a WeatherWatch spokesperson.
“High pressure is expanding over the lower half of the South Island, and this will usher in cooler weather overnight with some areas of the South Island near freezing. Around Tekapo, for example, it will do +1 ° C around sunrise and again the overnight low tonight.
“Rain and showers affect the eastern areas from Christchurch to Gisborne and the showers in Waikato and Bay of Plenty become more intense later on.
“There is the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms inland across the upper central part of the North Island.”
Although it’s a good day to start in the Bay of Plenty, the MetService guesses that afternoon showers are expected, some heavy with thunderstorms and hail, but clearing at night.
Nightly lows can drop to 9 degrees.
