State Highway 29 is now open after a fatal accident.
Police were alerted to the car-on-truck accident between Soliders Road and Valley View Road around 5.23 a.m.
The road was closed to allow Serious Crash to examine the scene.
Today’s accident raises the Holiday Road toll to 11.
Deputy Commissioner Scott Fraser urges motorists to drive carefully when they return home from vacation.
“We know that people will be eager to get home and the weather conditions will make driving challenging in many parts of New Zealand.
“But we don’t want to see any more families affected by the tragedy this holiday period and we need all road users to do their part to get everyone home safely.
“It’s very simple: keep your speed low and appropriate for the conditions, observe following distances, put your phones away, and take a break if you feel fatigued.
“By doing these simple things, we take care of our families, each other, and everyone on the roads.”
