A woman who died after her car hit a horse in the Bay of Plenty was a nurse in a nursing home.

Police say the accident happened on Te Teko Rd, near Edgecumbe, around 11:20 p.m. Saturday.

Police say Elizabeth Edwards, a 59-year-old Edgecumbe woman, was the only person in the car when it crashed.

“The police extend their condolences to his family.

“Investigations into the circumstances of the accident are ongoing.

“We would like to urge anyone who has witnessed the accident or who has information about the horse’s property to contact the police.”

Elizabeth had been driving home from work when the accident occurred, says Edgecumbe volunteer firefighter, main station officer Iain Powell.

This is not the first time that emergency services have been called to an accident on this highway involving livestock.

“That part of the way is quite [known] for that kind of thing. ”

Iain says he has been a volunteer firefighter for 25 years and in that time, there were four accidents on that stretch of the road, two fatal, involving cattle.

“It is not just about horses, there has been a beaten pig.”

It is always difficult to take calls where someone died and Iain says he has feelings for the family.

“Imagine if that was your mother or sister, but it is a job that we have to do.”

This was the first accident they attended since the country closed.

The Serious Accident Unit is investigating.

If you have any information that may help with the investigation, call the Police at 105 quoting the file number 200510/2604.
