12.45pm update: A search and rescue operation continues on Mount Maunganui following previous reports of a missing swimmer.
“They’ve been searching for about 45 minutes with the helicopter and search and rescue,” says Jeremy Sparrow.
Police say they received a report around 10.35am from a man who appeared to have disappeared into the water in front of Marine Parade.
Police are now searching the area with the help of Surf Life Saving, the Coast Guard, and the TECT rescue helicopter.

“They’re looking between Shark Alley and Tay St,” Jeremy says. “They have been searching a wider area, with the helicopter flying up and down quite low.
“There are two or three boats in the water.”
Groups of people congregate along the beach waiting and watching as the search continues.

Earlier, 11.30am M. A search and rescue operation is underway at Mount Maunganui following reports of a missing swimmer.
A police spokesman says they received a report around 10:35 a.m. of a person appearing to have disappeared into the water in front of Marine Parade on Mount Maunganui.
“The police are on the scene with Surf Life Saving and Search and Rescue.
“A rescue helicopter has been dispatched to help with the search.”
